Healing touch is an energy based therapeutic approach to healing. It is based on
the underlying belief that we, as humans, don't "stop at our skin" but are actually a web
of systems or energy fields that constantly interact with our surroundings.
In health, the fields are smooth and flowing, with a constant interchange with our environment. When we become ill or stressed, the energy fields become distorted and out of balance.
Through instruction and learning to bring themselves to a place of inner quiet and then focusing their intent on helping their clients, practitioners can assist the client in accessing their own internal healing ability. The client needs to be open to their own healing, but need not have a particular belief system.
Healing touch has been found to be effective in all illnesses, with more
rapid recoveries and, in many instances, marked decreases in pain levels. Therapeutic touch, the
same practice, but without the physical contact, is presently being taught in recognized RN and
LPN programs, and is fast becoming an integral part of therapeutic nursing.
